Competitions, prizes

Occasionally I send my pictures to different kinds of photo-competitions and so far hasn't received much of a success, though last year I won a one year subscription of Kamera-lehti, which is the biggest photography magazine in Finland.

So last week I was very happy receive a letter from a travel magazine "Matkaopas", where they announced that I had received a 3rd place in a travel photography of the year 2008 -competition, which was organized by Kamera-Lehti, Matkaopas-lehti and Finnish Readers Digest.

With my 3rd place I won a Canon PowerShot G9 digital camera, which will be a nice back-up to my Canon EOS 400D DSLR. Can't wait to get my hands on that.

The picture is taken from local student jazz-bar - Graffity-Club at Minsk, Belarus. The judges of the competition liked especially the atmosphere and exotism (??) and also thanked the beautiful light in the picture.

Me and couple of my friends bumped into that bar, which was outskirts of Minsk, because we had heard (Don't remember from where) that there is some band performing during that night.

Fot this shot I had to boost ISO to 1600 so there are some noise in the picture. But I think that doesn't disturb so much in this kind of moody picture

Today I got again nice news again, though this time through telephone. I receive a phonecall from an Agency for advertising and marketing design - Pakkahuone. It is Oulu-based and they organized photo-competition "Hauska kaupunni" and they were looking for pictures where is best captured the funness and happiness in a City of Oulu.

I had sent three pictures to that competition and one of them was the most liked among the voters. I will receive a 200 euros for that so thank you very much for all of you who voted my picture. I have a loong shopping list of camera gear to buy.

I took this picture during 20. Terwahölkkä and -Marathon event, which was held in May here in Oulu. I was going along the running route with my camera taking shoots and in one palce there was a local dancing school performing and entertaining the runners. Runners were happy and smiling to see this group of dancers and I was lucky to get this "decisive moment" captured of man who jumped high in the air and showed his happiness.

So people, Do participate and send your pictures to photography competitions. Most of the time it doesn't cost you a penny and you might win some cool stuff or even cash.
